If you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels like a storybook; cobblestone streets, ocean air, charming courtyards, and golden sunsets… Carmel-by-the-Sea might be exactly what you have been picturing.

I’m a wedding photographer based just up the road in Monterey, and I can confirm that Carmel is romantic, walkable, and full of beautiful little nooks that make your day feel intimate and magical.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through:

  • The best Carmel-by-the-Sea wedding venues
  • My favorite photo locations
  • What to know about weather, fog, tides & permits
  • Tips for getting the most out of your Carmel wedding photos

Whether you’re planning a full wedding, an intimate celebration, or a tiny beach ceremony, this guide is for you.

Why Choose Carmel-by-the-Sea for Your Wedding?

Carmel is the perfect blend of old-world charm and coastal California beauty.

Here’s what makes it such a special place to say “I do”:

  • Walkable fairytale village – Storybook cottages, ivy-covered walls, flower boxes, and hidden passageways everywhere.
  • Carmel Beach – Soft white sand, sweeping ocean views, and incredible sunsets.
  • Romantic inns and courtyards – Perfect for intimate weddings and elopements.
  • Nearby Carmel Valley – Sunny vineyards and rolling hills just a short drive away if you want that golden, countryside feel.

If you’re picturing something romantic, cozy, and relaxed, but still elevated, Carmel weddings are exactly that.

Best Carmel-by-the-Sea Wedding Venue

There are so many beautiful venues in and around Carmel, and each one has its own distinct vibe. Here are some styles to think about as you search:

1. Romantic Inns & Boutique Hotels

Carmel is known for its charming inns and boutique hotels tucked into the village. These are perfect if you’re planning:

  • A small-to-medium guest count
  • A weekend celebration where everyone can stay nearby
  • A wedding where everything is walkable — dinner, drinks, photos, and the beach

Look for features like:

  • Courtyards with string lights
  • Fireplaces and cozy interiors
  • Proximity to Carmel Beach for sunset portraits

These spaces photograph beautifully, especially if you love the idea of getting-ready photos in a quaint room with big windows and textured details.

2. Carmel Mission Basilica (For Classic & Timeless)

If you’re dreaming of something more traditional and historic, the Carmel Mission Basilica is one of the most iconic ceremony locations in the area.

What couples love about it:

  • Gorgeous Spanish architecture – arches, carved doors, warm stone, and courtyards.
  • A sense of history and sacredness – it feels deeply meaningful and serene.
  • Beautiful gardens and walls that make for timeless, romantic portraits.

A popular flow is:

  1. Ceremony at the mission
  2. Photos in the gardens and around the property
  3. Reception at a nearby inn, restaurant, or private venue in Carmel or Carmel Valley

It’s a beautiful blend of classic and coastal when paired with sunset photos later in the day.

3. Carmel Beach

If you close your eyes and picture saying your vows with your toes in the sand and the sound of waves nearby… Carmel Beach might be your spot.

Why couples choose Carmel Beach:

  • Simple, sweet ceremonies that feel intimate and heartfelt
  • The ability to keep things low-key and focused on the two of you
  • Amazing backdrops for photos—sand, cypress trees, and views of the coastline

Things to consider:

  • It can be windy and foggy, especially in the summer months.
  • You may need a permit depending on your guest count and setup.
  • Tides and timing matter—your photographer can help you plan around this.

As a photographer, I love beach ceremonies here when couples really embrace the natural, easygoing feel and trust me to guide them on light and timing.

4. Carmel Valley Sun-Soaked Vineyards & Hills

While not technically in the village, Carmel Valley is close enough that many couples mix the two:

  • Morning or early afternoon in Carmel-by-the-Sea for getting ready & first look
  • Ceremony and reception at a vineyard or estate in Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley tends to be warmer and sunnier, with:

  • Golden hills at sunset
  • Rows of vines or gardens
  • A slightly more rustic or wine-country feel

If you’re planning a wedding weekend, this combo gives you the best of both worlds: the charm of Carmel and the warmth and openness of the valley.

Best Photo Locations in Carmel-by-the-Sea

One of the reasons photographing weddings in Carmel is great is because of how walkable it is — you can sneak away for portraits without disappearing for hours.

Here are some of my favorite types of locations:

1. The Village Streets & Secret Passageways

Within just a few blocks you’ll find:

  • Ivy-covered walls
  • Arched doorways and wooden gates
  • Flower-filled courtyards
  • Hidden alleyways and passageways

These are perfect for:

  • First looks
  • Quiet post-ceremony portraits
  • Candid walking shots that feel like you’re in your own little world

I always build a little walking route based on your venue and the light so we can maximize beautiful backdrops without rushing.

2. Carmel Beach & the Coastal Path

Of course, we have to talk about the beach. Some ideas:

  • Pre-ceremony first look on a tucked-away part of the beach
  • Post-ceremony sunset portraits with wind in your hair and waves in the background
  • Photos along the coastal path, where you get great views without going fully into the sand

Beach lighting can change quickly, so I always recommend giving ourselves a little buffer for these portraits. Even 20–30 minutes during golden hour can give you a whole gallery of dreamy images.

3. Your Venue’s Little Corners

Some of my favorite photos aren’t in “iconic” Carmel spots, they’re in:

  • A quiet corner of your inn’s courtyard
  • By a fireplace in the lobby
  • On a balcony or staircase
  • In front of a textured wall with beautiful light

When I arrive at your venue, I’m always scouting for these little gems so that your images feel personal to your day, not just the location.

Weather, Fog & Timing: What to Expect in Carmel

Let’s talk about one of the biggest questions couples have: What’s the weather really like?

Fog (“June Gloom” & Friends)

Carmel is a coastal town, which means fog is normal—and honestly, beautiful. Soft, cloudy light can be incredibly flattering in photos.

That said, here are a few tips:

  • Don’t panic if the forecast shows clouds or fog — this often means soft, dreamy light.
  • If you’re dreaming of glowing sunsets, I’ll help you build a timeline that gives us flexibility to chase the best light we get that day.

Wind & Temperature

Even in the warmer months, it can feel cooler and breezier near the water.

Some little pro tips:

  • Bring a wrap, shawl, or jacket you love for beach portraits.
  • Consider hairstyles that can handle a bit of wind — romantic waves, low buns, braids, etc.
  • Let your guests know to dress in layers, especially for evening ceremonies.

Best Time of Day for Photos

Light matters more than almost anything else for your photos.

In Carmel, I usually recommend:

  • Late afternoon ceremonies that lead into golden hour portraits
  • Sneaking away for 10–15 minutes at sunset if your timeline allows
  • A slower, more intentional getting-ready timeline so you’re not rushed and we can capture sweet, candid moments

When we work together, I’ll help you design a photo-friendly wedding day timeline that still feels relaxed and natural.

Tips for Getting the Best Wedding Photos in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Here are a few simple ways to set yourself up for beautiful, relaxed photos:

1. Choose Locations That Feel Like You

Whether that’s:

  • A cozy inn courtyard
  • A historic mission
  • A breezy beach
  • A sun-soaked vineyard

The best photos happen when you feel like yourself and truly love where you are.

2. Build in Breathing Room

Little pockets of time in your day make a huge difference:

  • A quiet moment for a first look
  • Time to walk around the village together
  • A sunset break to soak it all in

You’ll enjoy your day more and we’ll get more genuine, natural moments on camera.

3. Trust Your Photographer with Light & Locations

You don’t have to know every corner of Carmel — that’s my job.

I’ll guide you on:

  • What time of day works best for your ceremony
  • Which side of the street has the prettiest light
  • Whether we should start on the beach or in the village
  • How to pose (or not pose) so you feel natural and comfortable

You just get to be present with each other while I worry about the rest.
